Connected Communities 2003 Interaction Ivrea: Gillian Crampton Smith, Simona Maschi The CONVIVIO consortium is a large, international and highly reputed research community. It was founded by sixteen influential institutions and companies from nine countries, representing the cultural richness of Europe. The participating researchers have diverse backgrounds (computer science, information systems, psychology, social sciences, industrial design and interaction design) and their teams are truly multi-disciplinary. It provides a supportive infrastructure for the interdisciplinary and international community of researchers and practitioners who develop "convivial technologies" - novel information and communications technologies that � enhance the quality of life and human interaction � put people first, by means of a uniquely European trend-setting collaboration between technology and design, software and hardware research and the arts � empower and simplify people's everyday lives, by making their interaction with these technologies simpler, easier, and more pleasant, or even fun � increase social cohesion and inclusiveness, by putting people at the centre of technological change independent of age, abilities and gender � make knowledge selectively accessible to those who need it, avoiding the creation of information overflows and technological barriers � support communication and interaction, so that the identity of existing communities is enhanced and new communities emerge � help communities to open themselves up to the experiences of other communities � invent new interaction patterns, allowing for the exploration of living in mixed (virtual and physical) realities � develop multi-disciplinary approaches to the design and development of interactive systems CONVIVIO seeks the highest possible visibility and impact for leading edge research in this field, and helps the community of researchers to share experiences and knowledge, and to become an important voice in the ICT research arena. CONVIVIO builds on earlier European Commission-funded research networks i3net, Disappearing Computer and Presence. Related Files
