Mediscover is a 36 months project, which targets Strategic Objective 2.4.11 of the IST FP6 Call 4, Integrated biomedical
information for better health, with a specific focus on : "Methods and systems for improved medical knowledge discovery and understanding through integration of biomedical information (e.g. using modelling, visualisation, data mining and grid technologies). Biomedical data and information to be considered include not only clinical information relating to tissues, organs or personal health related information but also information at the level of molecules and cells, such as that acquired from genomics and proteomics research"
The major challenge is to transform the raw data collected from patients into meaningful, aggregate, to-the-point information, taking into account limiting factors such as the fact that data is stored in different formats and languages, generated at different levels of granularity, managed by users with different purposes in mind, available across diverse physical locations, accessed with varying levels of security and within locally defined privacy rules. Furthermore, the efficient transformation of this data will depend on user defined contexts. Exploiting data to support real progress in diagnosis and health planning urgently requires new approaches that address the complex factors involved while supporting collaborative work at international levels, all the more so because diseases spread at an accelerated pace and epidemics are a mounting concern in the international community.
MEDISCOVER sets out to tackle this challenge by developing an innovative framework that will (1) provide integrated information that is drawn from appropriate sets of heterogeneous and autonomous data sources, while also preserving their integrity, (2) enable users to derive knowledge from this information by dynamically adapting data searches and selections to their needs, (3) enable communities of experts to manage their knowledge.
The aim is to provide a technically feasible and economically viable solution for a range of users in primary care, hospitals, research institutions, whether working as individuals or as teams.
