Photo by Ivan Gasparini Interactive objects, environments and services to look at, touch and try out. Interaction Design Institute Ivrea takes new media into our daily lives. The Interaction Design Institute Ivrea space capsule, with its crew of aliens from Ivrea, will be landing for the first time at Milan's Salone del Mobile. The module features an exhibition of the most fascinating products developed by its international community of interaction designers (students, teachers and researchers). Here's a small sample of what's on offer: a classic Olivetti "Lettera 22" typewriter that sends email; interactive wallpaper which, when touched lightly, enables you to give commands to your household appliances; an inflatable room for you to leave digital audiograffiti in; a "clairvoyant" table that functions as a virtual fortune-teller; techno-bags that produce a stain when they "perceive" a call on your mobile; and an old Fiat-500 car that "downloads" MP3 files when you fill it up with fuel. The exhibition's title has been chosen deliberately, and is a direct reference to the well-known fifties science fiction film by Don Siegel "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers". At that time, the future was full of potential causes for anxiety, with the growing intensity of the Cold War, but today we can look forward to it confidently and with our eyes open, as we experience it through the conceptual approach adopted by Interaction-Ivrea. The interaction designer is the "friendly alien", who can rework the past - viewed in a covertly retro way - and use it to look at the future through "human" lenses. This is the "creative body snatcher", who exploits technologies to create objects and services that offer us moments of light-hearted fun as well as pure aesthetic enjoyment.
