First the Internet connected people to each other and to information from all over the world. Now it is possible to link objects via the Internet.
BOX is a platform that allows non-technical people to experiment with designing interactions between physical devices and with the wireless networking of such devices. These networks could connect objects in different rooms of a building-or even in different countries or continents. The BOX system also works as a learning tool to introduce students to the concepts of physical computing.
While the form of the objects could be almost anything, using a simple cardboard box focuses attention on what the box does, not how it looks. Each box contains just enough electronics to allow the addition of input devices and digital data of any sort (eg, sensors, text information). Each box also has output capability (to turn on a motor, shine a light, make a sound, send digital data).
The BOX system uses a simple Web-based visual language on screen to create and maintain information networks in many different configurations. This enables interactions to take place anywhere in the world; for example, a box in Ivrea can have a switch that turns on a light in Tokyo-all done via the Internet.
